Bad Bunny’s Watch Dealer Is Working Overtime

Words by

The musician is stacking grail-tier watches on the regular. We unpack his collection and what sets it apart from the rest.

Bad Bunny (born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) makes music that blends traditional Puerto Rican genres like salsa and merengue with contemporary sounds like reggaeton. When it comes to his style, it’s the same, too. This is a guy who served Tudor playboy in Maison Margiela at the 2024 Met Gala and remains the internet’s archdaddy of big slouchy fits. And his watch collection also brings this blend of traditional and contemporary tastes to the table. It goes beyond more predictable trophy pieces and feels deeply in-tune with his personal style; a product of a good relationship with your watch dealer.

Take the musician’s appearance at the 2023 GLAAD Vanguard Awards in 2023. Here, the actor wore a yellow gold wood dial Rolex Day-Date. Rocking any kind of gold Day-Date would have been a flex, given its blend of prestige, function, and history (the watch is nicknamed the ‘President’s watch’ or ‘Prezzy’ thanks to the number of world leaders that have taken a shine to the model) and offers a handy, day, date, and time function. But Bad Bunny’s ‘wood dial’ took things up a notch.

Introduced in the 1970s and featuring a smooth earthy dial, you’ve got a subtle contrast between the case and bracelet. And it screams ‘I have a conversation pit in my mansion’. As far as wrist checks go, the Day-Date is the ultimate ‘I’ve made it watch’. It’s expensive, timeless, and puts you on a very high-profile list of wearers including A$AP Rocky, Roger Federer, and Jay-Z. So it’s ideal for a guy who ranked at number three of Spotify’s most-streamed artists of 2024. But by opting for a vintage model with a lesser-seen dial, he’s showing he looks hype and for a watch reflective of his distinct style.

But the musician’s love for the Crown is strong. He’s also worn a gold Submariner Date Reference 16618 and flexed a 31mm Olive Datejust on Instagram. This penchant for smaller watches like the latter has placed the artist as a leader of the teeny tiny watch trend that sees guys opting for scaled-down watches and those once deemed for women.

Naturally, as a very famous person with a hankering for microscopic grails, Cartier has a spot in Bad Bunny’s collection. Because when you’ve got an archive of highly coveted and shaped timepieces like the French jeweller and watchmaker, it’s primed for a slimline wristcheck. Just see the Cartier Santos “Carrée” he rocked to Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2024 runway show. Its 29mm by 41mm case is made from solid gold with a factory-set diamond bezel, and rounded out with diamond-set screws. It’s not a quiet watch by any stretch. It’s more Gordan Gecko meets Miami startup king. But when you’re an internationally renowned artist, you can pull it off like a champ.

By now, it’s clear Bad Bunny isn’t a one watch guy. He’s not averse to shelling out on a nice timepiece. Nor is he afraid of bling. It puts him into the tier of collectors that own the stuff most of us only see on Instagram, like vintage watches from the so-called ‘holy trinity’ (a highly coveted group of luxury watch brands comprising Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin). Like the Patek Philippe 3980.

It’s an interesting choice, and the kind of thing that sets him apart as a collector (he’s also the proud owner of a mighty Patek Philippe Ellipse, too). The 3980 released in the 1990s as a women’s watch, hence those dainty, shaped proportions. But courtside at a Los Angeles Lakers game in 2023 he paired it with jeans and a sweater.

Here, the smaller case size and added bling amps up a chill fit, and elevates the whole vibe with a thought-out tension – this is a watch originally designed to be worn with luxurious cocktail and formal attire, being worn with jeans. It’s the same thing he does with his vintage Audemars Piguet Ladies Watch from the 1990s. It has a hexagonal dial, braided bracelet, a diamond bezel packed with rubies, and an original movement. It’s a nice addition to his moe well-known and larger watches, which includes a baby Patek Philippe Nautilus,  iced-out AP Royal Oak Chronograph, and a more subdued date and time steel Royal Oak. All show his watches tick the design and engineering boxes, but in his own way.

Earlier this year, Bad Bunny bulked out his watch guy credentials with the Vacheron Constantin  Patrimony ref. 43031. Worn to the iHeartRadio Music Awards, it showed his collecting spans the holy trinity of watches. It’s full gold (of course), and a perpetual calendar, which is a watch speak for a complicated timepiece capable of tracking the day, date, and month, while keeping track of leap years. These bad boys are super complicated, and require some serious skill to make. Bagging a perpetual calendar from Vacheron Constantin – what is widely considered to be one of the most prestigious watchmakers in the world – is a one-way ticket to the horological big dog club.

Bad Bunny has amassed a formidable and grail-stuffed watch collection. And while being one of the most streamed artists in the world and selling out arenas on the regular, his collection goes beyond the usual milestones. It’s unique, unpredictable, and shows he loves the hunt.
