The star of HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot spills the goss on what is set to be the most anticipated show of 2021, and ponders the pros and cons of social media.
With a strong slope of bone for jaw, two blue petalled eyes and a lick of hair curled in perfect pin-up shape, Thomas Doherty’s is the face that launched a thousand fan fictions. Internet novellas and Reddit threads alike have envisioned the 26-year-old actor as every fairytale prince, archetypal hero and love interest imaginable. Having been labelled a heartthrob since his early work in Disney’s Descendants franchise, in which the star played antagonist pirate Harry Hook, bedecked, throughout, in kohl and a costume sans sleeves, it must have come as no surprise to the actor that extreme fanaticism has since surrounded his good looks.
“I think it’s really just the Scottish accent!” Doherty quips, bookending the sentiment with butter thick laughter. He adds, earnestly, “I’m not naïve, I’m sure that being conventionally good looking has in whatever way helped secure the work” – the work being an impressive portfolio that includes another Disney entity, the musical series The Lodge, Emmy-nominated show Catherine the Great, opposite Dame Helen Mirren, and TV’s High Fidelity with Zoe Kravitz – “so I’m not going to wish my looks away. Like anyone with sense would, I’ve utilised what I have. But, you know, age comes, and with age the wrinkles will come and then my value as a heartthrob will pass. So the focus is always to keep on developing myself as an actor, being diverse, working hard, being authentic, and disassociating my worth and my value from my looks.” A beat. “But, yeah, you know, we’re in Hollywood baby, so having nice teeth and a six pack helps, especially if they want you for a sex scene!”
Doherty’s next role, which will no doubt add fuel to his fanbase’s proverbial fire, is as one of the leads in the anticipated HBO Max reboot of Gossip Girl. It is a project and part guarded fiercely – “this is definitely the most secretive thing I’ve ever done” – and even the cast themselves are limited in what they know...
