The Peaky Blinders breakout star Finn Cole bids farewell to Birmingham, embracing the next chapter of his life on-screen.
There’s an undeniable amount of dedication involved to portray a character as a one-off, but to commit to that figure and evolve with them for over eight years is a challenge, particularly as you’re growing into adulthood alongside them. “That’s all in the writing though. Any actor will tell you that,” shares Cole. “When the writing is good, it makes the process so much easier, so I give a lot of credit to Steven Knight.” “And some to yourself, surely?” I reply as he picks up his mug to take a sip. “Yeah, I’m not very good at that,” he smiles, glancing to the side. “I remember when working with Helen, everytime we were doing a scene, every take would be different, we’d speed up the pace or slow it down. You’d start to get the feel of it so quickly and by the third or fourth take, you’d feel like we’d workshopped it for months. She was a master of that. You don’t get that luxury on some projects, but Peaky Blinders has always been a great environment for boosting your confidence.”
He looks relaxed, while the world around him talks in deep awe and analysis of the show he’s dedicated his life to. “Do you feel rested?” I ask. “I do now. For the first time since the start of my career, I’ve had some solid time off.” But it seems like Cole won’t be resting for too long, a zealot for the adrenaline rush of it all. “For the last season of Peaky Blinders, I loved the long hours, the long days. Getting back to the hotel room and just falling on my bed, learning lines and then passing out, getting up the next day and doing it all over again. You get days on set where you’re doing night shoots for the third night in a row, you’re exhausted, the crew is exhausted and your call time is at 1am. That’s the buzz of it all. There’s a reason why there’s 40 people standing around in the cold in the middle of the night. It’s because we’re good at what we do and when we come together, we can make something great.”
