DAMSON IDRIS cover Man About Town 2020, Chapter II

DAMSON IDRIS wears BOSS on the cover of the latest issue of Man About Town: 2020 - Chapter 2.

Since his breakout role in John Singleton’s FX crime drama Snowfall in 2017,  Damson Idris has experienced a dizzying rise to success in the States, navigating the glamour and pressures of sudden fame all whilst being a comparatively new face on home turf. That disorientating balance has shifted over the past two years with roles in Black Mirror, The Twilight Zone and Farming — for which he won the Award for Best Actor in a British Film at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2019 — and as his influence has grown in the way he always dreamed it would, he’s established himself as one of the most exciting rising actors of our time.
Speaking to his friend, actor and writer Daniel Kaluuya for the cover of Man About Town, Idris takes us back to where his career started, tracing his journey so far and ruminating on the experiences that have shaped him. Looking to the future, he reflects on his role in upcoming action sci-fi film Outside the Wire alongside Anthony Mackie, the responsibility tied to his art and legacy, and why this year has taught him to focus on the joys of the present.

"I like playing characters that have been stigmatised as being stereotypical, so a character like Franklin on Snowfall. People would say ‘Oh, he’s a gangster, we don’t wanna play that anymore, we don’t wanna see that anymore’. But the reason that we say that is because justice hasn’t been given to them, and everyone’s story deserves to be told. I know one million Franklins where I grew up. So why shouldn’t they be shown on screen?"
